Softball Takes Series Finale At Western Carolina, 6-4

CULLOWHEE, N.C. –
The Samford softball team wrapped up its Southern Conference series at Western Carolina with a 6-4 win Sunday afternoon.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 17-25 overall and 6-3 in Southern Conference play. Western Carolina falls to 14-23 overall and 2-7 in league games
 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Kathryn Jackson went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Madison Couch went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.
  • Timberlyn Shurbutt drove in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance.
  • Taylor DeCelles (5-9) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up four runs, just one earned, on five hits to earn the win for the Bulldogs.
  • Emily Barnett picked up her third save of the season, allowing just three hits over the final 3.0 innings.
  • For Western Carolina, Bailey Huneycutt homered and drove in one run in her only official at-bat.
  • Hunter Gibbons and Shaina Reid had two hits each for the Catamounts.
  • Reed (5-12) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits to take the loss for WCU.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Western Carolina took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Ashlyn Long scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 Catamount lead.
  • Samford took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Timberlyn Shurbutt singled to drive in Ashlyn Barnes and Grayson King for a 2-1 Samford lead.
  • In the fifth inning, Samford added four runs to push its lead to 6-1. Barnes, Jackson and Couch drove in a run each, and Amanda Briskin scored on an error as Samford took a five-run lead.
  • Western Carolina came back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 6-4. Huneycutt hit a solo home run, and Kayla Brewer and Madison Armstrong drove in a run each to bring the Catamounts to within two runs.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will host ETSU in a three-game series next weekend. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m., and a single game Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
