MACON, Ga. – The Samford baseball team split a Southern Conference doubleheader at Mercer Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs dropped the first game, 1-0, but came back to take the final game by a score of 7-2.
With the split, Samford's record moves to 34-15 overall and 14-4 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs sit in first place in the league standings. Mercer is now 26-21 overall and 13-8 in league games.
GAME 1: MERCER 1, SAMFORD 0
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Max Pinto went 2-for-3, while Jordan Fucci went 2-for-4 to lead Samford at the plate.
- Connor Radcliff (2-1) took the loss on the mound for Samford, tossing 0.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits.
- Zach Hester started the game for the Bulldogs and pitched the first 8.0 innings, giving up no runs on just one hit, striking out 10 batters and walking just two.
- Collin Price drove in the lone run of the game for Mercer, going 1-for-4 in the game.
- Nick Spear (2-0) pitched 2.0 hitless innings in relief to earn the win on the mound for the Bears.
SCORING SUMMARY
- The teams went through the first eight and a half innings in a scoreless tie.
- In the bottom of the ninth inning, Price singled to drive in Zach Miller to give the Bears the 1-0 win.
GAME 2: SAMFORD 7, MERCER 2

- Fucci led Samford in the second game, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI.
- Branden Fryman also went 3-for-5 with an RBI for Samford.
- Jesse McCord (4-1) earned the win on the mound for Samford, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits.
- Kel Johnson went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead Mercer at the plate.
- Tanner Hall (6-4) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits to take the loss for the Bears.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Samford jumped on top early in game two of the twin bill with three runs in the top of the first inning. Fucci hit a two-run home run, and Sonny DiChiara drove in a run with a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 Samford lead.
- Fucci homered to left field in the top of the third inning to push Samford's lead to 4-0.
- After Mercer plated a run in the bottom of the third inning, Samford answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 7-1 Samford lead. Brooks Carlson drove in two runs and Fryman drove in one to give Samford a six-run lead.
- Mercer added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 7-2.
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will host Western Carolina for the Bulldogs' final home series next weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
