Softball Drops Two At Chattanooga Sunday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –
The Samford softball team was swept in a doubleheader at Chattanooga Sunday afternoon at Frost Stadium.  Chattanooga won the first game, 6-0, and the second, 2-1 in eight innings.
 
With the losses, Samford ends its regular season with a record of 22-29 overall and 11-6 in Southern Conference play. Chattanooga improves to 33-14 and 11-7 in league games. Samford will be the No. 2 seed for the SoCon Tournament, which will begin Wednesday in Chattanooga.
 
GAME 1: CHATTANOOGA 6, SAMFORD 0

SCORING SUMMARY
  • Chattanooga scored five runs in the first inning, with four coming on a grand slam by Beltran for a 5-0 Moc lead.
  • The Mocs added another run in the second inning to make the score 6-0.
 
GAME 2: CHATTANOOGA 2, SAMFORD 1 (8 INN.)
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Maddie Dorsett went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Samford in the second game.
  • Hinton had the team's lone RBI.
  • McKenna Gillespie (6-4) took the loss for Samford, pitching the complete game, allowing two runs on 12 hits.
  • For Chattanooga, Emily Coltharp went 5-for-5 at the plate and drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
  • Hayleigh Weissenbach also drove in a run for the Mocs, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Allison Swinford (8-3) pitched the complete game, giving up one run on eight hits to earn the win for the Mocs.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Samford took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Shurbutt scored from third base when Hinton reached base on a fielder's choice for the game's first run.
  • Chattanooga knotted the score at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • In the bottom of the eighth inning, Chattanooga's Coltharp singled up the middle to drive in Kacie Lynch to give the Mocs the 2-1 walk-off win.
