Late WCU Runs Sink Softball In SoCon Tournament Opener, 6-4

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –
Seventh-seeded Western Carolina plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning to down second-seeded Samford, 6-4, in the first round of the Southern Conference Softball Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Frost Stadium.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 22-30 on the season, while Western Carolina improves to 21-30. Samford will now face the loser of this afternoon's late game between Furman and Chattanooga Thursday morning. Western Carolina will play the winner of the same game.
 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Madison Couch led Samford, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Ryan Brzozoski also went 2-for-3 for the Bulldogs.
  • Whitney Hinton hit a home run, going 1-for-4 with two RBI.
  • Hinton's homer is her 14th of the season, tying the school single-season record set by Abby Adams in 2014.
  • McKenna Gillespie (6-5) pitched 6.2 innings, giving up six runs, five earned, on nine hits to take the loss for Samford.
  • For Western Carolina, Erica Hayes went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI.
  • Bailey Huneycutt went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Catamounts.
  • Shaina Reed (9-15) earned the win for WCU, tossing 5.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Western Carolina took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first inning.
  • Samford took a 2-1 lead on a two-run home run to left field by Hinton in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Samford added another run in the bottom of the second inning to push its lead to 3-1. Timberlyn Shurbutt singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Couch for a two-run Samford lead.
  • Couch doubled to right-center field to drive in Amanda Briskin in the third inning to make the score 4-1.
  • Western Carolina plated a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Samford lead to 4-2.
  • In the top of the seventh inning, Hayes tripled to drive in two runs, and Hunter Gibbons and Huneycutt drove in one run each as the Catamounts scored four runs to come back to take a 6-4 advantage.
