CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – In a game that was delayed in the top of the sixth inning Saturday night and had to be resumed Sunday, the Samford softball team picked up a 4-3 win in 11 innings in the first game of a three-game series at Chattanooga.
With the win, Samford improves to 22-27 overall and 11-4 in southern Conference play. Chattanooga falls to 31-14 overall and 9-7 in league games. The teams will now play a doubleheader this afternoon. If Samford can win one of the two games, the Bulldogs would secure a share of the SoCon regular season title and the No. 1 seed for this week's SoCon Tournament, which starts Wednesday in Chattanooga.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- For Samford at the plate, Hannah Trombley went 3-for-6 with a double and two RBI.
- Maddie Dorsett went 2-for-5 and drove in the game-winning run in the top of the 11th inning.
- Kathryn Jackson went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
- McKenna Gillespie (6-3) pitched 5.2 innings in relief, giving up no runs on three hits to earn the win for Samford.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Samford jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Trombley doubled to drive in Dorsett and Whitney Hinton for the first two runs. The third run of the inning scored when Jackson singled to drive in Trombley for a 3-0 Samford lead.
- Chattanooga came back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Samford lead to 3-2.
- The Mocs tied the score at 3-3 with one run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- The game remained tied until Samford plated a run in the top of the 11th inning to take a 4-3 lead. Timberlyn Shurbutt scored when Dorsett reached base on a fielder's choice, giving Samford the lead.

Samford and Chattanooga will conclude their series with a doubleheader 30 minutes following the resumed game at Frost Stadium.
