Quick Start, Steady Pitching Lift Softball To 7-0 SoCon Tournament Win Over Furman

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –
The Samford softball team plated six runs in the first inning, and rode a stellar pitching performance from Annalyn Yantis to earn a 7-0 win over Furman in an elimination game in the Southern Conference Tournament Thursday at Frost Stadium.


 
In the win, Whitney Hinton became the school record holder in single-season home runs with her 15th of the season. The total breaks the old record of 14 set by Abby Adams in 2014.
 
With the win, Samford improve to 23-30 on the season. The Bulldogs will play at approximately 3:30 p.m. (CT) Thursday against the loser of the game between ETSU and UNCG. Furman ends its season with a mark of 13-38.
 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Hinton homered and drove in two runs, going 1-for-3 at the plate.
  • Kathryn Jackson also hit a solo home run for Samford, going 2-for-3.
  • Timberlyn Shurbutt had two hits and scored two runs, while Ashlyn Barnes had two hits as well.
  • Yantis (5-8) pitched the complete 7.0 innings, giving up no runs on just three hits to earn the win for the Bulldogs.
  • Casey Bigham went 2-for-3 to lead Furman at the plate.
  • Emily DeMonte (11-19) tossed 1.0 inning, giving up six runs on five hits to take the loss for the Paladins.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Samford scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 6-0 lead. Hinton hit a two-run home run, and Jackson followed with a solo homer for the first three runs. Hannah Trombley and Maddie Dorsett also drove in runs in the inning, and Kelsey Royalty scored on an error.
  • Ryan Brzozoski singled up the middle to drive in Shurbutt in the bottom of the fifth inning to push Samford's lead to 7-0.

Samford will take on the loser of the game between ETSU and UNCG today at approximately 3:30 p.m. (CT).
