CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Samford softball team plated six runs in the first inning, and rode a stellar pitching performance from
Annalyn Yantis to earn a 7-0 win over Furman in an elimination game in the Southern Conference Tournament Thursday at Frost Stadium.
In the win,
Whitney Hinton became the school record holder in single-season home runs with her 15
th of the season. The total breaks the old record of 14 set by
Abby Adams in 2014.
With the win, Samford improve to 23-30 on the season. The Bulldogs will play at approximately 3:30 p.m. (CT) Thursday against the loser of the game between ETSU and UNCG. Furman ends its season with a mark of 13-38.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Hinton homered and drove in two runs, going 1-for-3 at the plate.
- Kathryn Jackson also hit a solo home run for Samford, going 2-for-3.
- Timberlyn Shurbutt had two hits and scored two runs, while Ashlyn Barnes had two hits as well.
- Yantis (5-8) pitched the complete 7.0 innings, giving up no runs on just three hits to earn the win for the Bulldogs.
- Casey Bigham went 2-for-3 to lead Furman at the plate.
- Emily DeMonte (11-19) tossed 1.0 inning, giving up six runs on five hits to take the loss for the Paladins.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Samford scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 6-0 lead. Hinton hit a two-run home run, and Jackson followed with a solo homer for the first three runs. Hannah Trombley and Maddie Dorsett also drove in runs in the inning, and Kelsey Royalty scored on an error.
- Ryan Brzozoski singled up the middle to drive in Shurbutt in the bottom of the fifth inning to push Samford's lead to 7-0.
