BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's basketball team opened its regular season with a dramatic, 78-76 loss to Alabama A&M Sunday afternoon in the Pete Hanna Center.
With the loss, Samford falls to 0-1 on the season. Alabama A&M improves to 1-0.

- Christian Guess posted a double-double in the loss, scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
- Logan Dye scored a career-high 21 points in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alabama A&M jumped out to an early 8-2 lead with 16:42 left in the first half after a jumper by Garrett Hicks.
- Samford responded with a 7-0 run to take a 9-8 lead with 14:29 to go in the opening period after a layup by Gordon.
- With Alabama A&M leading, 12-11, Samford went on an 8-0 run to take a 19-12 lead with 7:48 left in the first half following a layup by Preston Parks.
- Samford opened up a 10-point lead at 27-17 on a three-pointer by Triston Chambers with 4:57 to play in the half.
- Samford took a 43-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.
- In the second half, Alabama A&M cut the Samford lead to five points at 47-42 with 15:07 to go after a jumper by Johnson.
- Samford pushed the lead back out to 10 points at 52-42 with 14:10 to go after a three-point play by Guess.
- With Samford leading, 57-47, Alabama A&M went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 57-54 with 10:59 left after a three-pointer by Hicks.
- The visiting Bulldogs took a 64-63 lead with 7:31 to go following a layup by Myles Parker.
- Samford came back to take a 71-68 lead with 3:11 to play after a free throw by Guess.
- Alabama A&M then tied the game on its next possession on a three-pointer by Brandon Miller, but Dye gave Samford a 73-71 lead with a layup with 2:34 remaining.
- Alabama A&M retook the lead at 75-73 with 1:14 to play after a jumper by Hicks.
- A three-point play by Gordon with 1:00 to go gave Samford a 76-75 lead.
- An Alabama A&M three-point play by Cameron Tucker gave the visitors at 78-76 lead with 5.9 seconds to play.
- Samford had one final shot to tie or win the game, but the attempt was just off and the game ended in a 78-76 Alabama A&M win.
