Softball Falls To UTSA, Gamecocks In Day One Of Jacksonville State Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Samford softball team fell in its opening games of the Jacksonville State Tournament, falling to University of Texas San Antonio, 3-1 and then dropping a game against the hosts Jacksonville State, 6-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opener against UTSA was a pitcher's duel until the top of the fourth inning where the Bulldogs drove a run across.
  • The duel continued until the bottom of the sixth, where two Samford errors proved costly, giving UTSA a two-run cushion going into the seventh inning, and the Bulldogs failed to mount a comeback.
  • In the second game of the day, the Bulldogs went down early, as Jacksonville State pushed across a run in the bottom of the second.
  • Samford bounced back with a two-run fourth inning, but the comfort of a lead was short lived when the Gamecocks tied the game in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Jacksonville State would score one run in the bottom of the fifth and three in an error-laden sixth to top the Bulldogs, 6-2.
 IN THE CIRCLE
  • Against UTSA, Taylor DeCelles (1-4) took the loss giving up three runs on five hits in 6.0 innings pitched. DeCelles had six strikeouts in the Bulldogs' first game of the tournament.
  • For UTSA, Erika Cortez (4-3) got the win giving up one run on four hits in 7.0 innings pitched.
  • Emily Barnett got the start for the Bulldogs against the hosts Jacksonville State and gave up two runs on five hits in 3.1 innings pitched. Morgan Robertson came on in relief and took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits in 2.2 innings pitched.
  • For the Gamecocks, Lexi Androlevich (2-1) secured the win giving up no runs on two hits in her 2.2 innings of relief.
NOTABLES 
  • The tournament opener was the first meeting between Samford and University of Texas San Antonio.
  • Against UTSA, Ryan Brzozoski led the Bulldogs going 2-for-3.
  • Amanda Briskin went 3-for-4 against the Gamecocks with three infield singles.

  • Samford will return to action for day two of the Jacksonville State Tournament against UTSA at 10 a.m., before wrapping up the weekend against Jacksonville State at 3 p.m. Saturday.
