BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- This week's Flashback Friday features Samford reinstating its football program in 1984 after a decade without the sport.
Â
Following the 1973 football season, Samford discontinued its program and the school spent a decade with no football team. In 1984, under the leadership of then president Dr. Thomas E. Corts, Samford brought the program back at the NCAA Division III level.
Â
That first season included a dramatic 38-33 win over Sewanee in the season finale. Â Four years later, Samford moved up to the NCAA Division I-FCS (then I-AA) level, where the Bulldogs have experienced success, including reaching the FCS Playoffs three times in the last seven seasons.
