MACON, Ga. – The Samford volleyball team opened the 2021 spring season with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 26-24) win at Mercer Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Arena.
With the win, Samford improves to 1-0. Mercer falls to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in SoCon play with the loss. Samford will be playing only SoCon matches this season.

KEY MOMENTS
- After falling behind, 2-0 in the first set, Samford then went on a 5-0 run to take a 5-2 lead on a kill by Lauren Deaton.
- Mercer fought back to take an 11-10 lead.
- The lead went back-and-forth from there.
- With Mercer leading, 20-19, Samford scored four-straight points to take a 23-20 lead.
- Samford took the first set, 25-23.
- In the second set, Samford jumped out to a commanding 16-9 lead.
- Mercer closed to within four points at 21-17.
- The Bears, however, could get no closer as Samford earned a 25-18 win in the second set.
- Samford jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the third set.
- Mercer scored six of the next seven points to take a 10-9 lead.
- Samford grabbed a 23-21 lead, but Mercer scored the next two points to knot the score at 23-23.
- With the score tied at 24-24, Samford scored the next two points to take the set, 26-24, and the match, three sets to none.

- Lauren Deaton led Samford with 18 kills in the win. She also tallied six digs for Samford
- Kenya McQuirter in her collegiate debut, had nine kills for the Bulldogs.
- Emily Naubert led Samford in digs with 13.
- Corinne Meglic had 37 assists for Samford.
- Brittany Major led Mercer with nine kills and seven digs.
