Volleyball Suffers Setback On The Road At Mercer

MACON, Ga. – The Samford University volleyball team fell to Southern Conference rivals, Mercer, in straight sets at a midweek showdown in Hawkins Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

In the first set, Mercer jumped out to an early 7-2 lead at home, but the Bulldog battled back pulling within two (8-6) behind a tip kill from setter Kayla Keshock. However, the Bears would put together a run taking a five-point advantage into the media timeout. Mercer continued to build momentum into the middle of the first set forcing head coach Keylor Chan to call a second timeout as the Bulldogs trailed 20-17. Coming out of the timeout, Keshock recorded four-straight points for Samford, a kill followed by three-straight service aces, to tie the set at 20-20. Despite the late Samford run, Mercer closed out the first set 25-22.

It was a back-and-forth battle in the early part of the second set, but Mercer was able to open a 13-7 advantage behind five successive points. The Bulldogs struggled to gain their footing despite a pair of kills from senior outside hitter Lauren Deaton, and Mercer was able to gather the second frame 25-16.

In the final set, the Bulldogs kept close contact with the Mercer Bears as the frame included seven ties and a lead change. The set remained knotted at 12-12, but a pair of mini-runs from Mercer secured a comfortable lead they would never relinquish. The Bears rattled off five-straight points in the final moments to take the third set 25-17.

FROM THE BOX SCORE

Deaton led the way offensively with seven kills on the night. Kenya McQuirter and Gracie Lynn Butler added six kills each.
In addition to Keshock's three aces and three kills, she also recorded 11 digs. Samford's libero, Kate Morgan added six digs to the Bulldog total.
For Mercer, Annie Karle and Jaida Howell posted double-digit kills with 12 and 10 respectively.

The Bulldogs will make their return to the Pete Hanna Center after a five-match road stint on Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 PM CT.
