BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford volleyball team earned a 3-0 (27-25, 25-14, 30-28) Southern Conference victory over the Furman Paladins Friday evening in the Pete Hanna Center.
With the win, Samford improves to 4-15 overall and 3-5 in SoCon play. Furman falls to 6-11 overall and 1-6 in league action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In the first set, Furman jumped out to a 10-4 lead after block assists by Sydney Tanner and Kelsey Watkins. Samford scored five of the next six points to cut the lead to 11-9 following a kill by
Kayla Keshock. Samford took a 14-12 advantage on a Furman attack error. Furman fought back to take an 18-17 lead following a Samford attack error. After Samford knotted the score at 18-18, the teams traded points into extra points until Samford was able to pull out the 27-25 win.
Samford led from start to finish in the second set. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-1 lead on an ace by
Kate Morgan. Furman fought back to cut the lead to three at 9-6. The Bulldogs built a seven-point lead at 16-9 after a kill by
Cameron Spence. With Samford leading, 20-14, the Bulldogs scored five of the last six points to take the set, 25-14.
In the third set, Furman took an early 9-5 lead after a Samford attack error. A kill by
Lauren Deaton cut the lead to 9-6, but Furman extended its lead to 14-7 after a Samford attack error. Samford fought back to cut the lead to 18-15 after a kill by
Gracie Lynn Butler. After Furman extended its lead to 21-16, Samford came back to force extra points. The Bulldogs took the 30-28 win on a kill by Deaton.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Deaton led Samford with 12 kills, followed by Butler with 10.
- Keshock and Morgan shared the team lead in digs with seven each.
- Keshock also tallied 39 assists in the match.
- For Furman, Bella Tolone tallied 10 kills.

- The Bulldogs will next play at The Citadel on Oct. 22. The match is set for a 5 p.m. (CT) start from Charleston, S.C.
