Marshall's Double-Double Helps Lead Bulldogs To 86-69 Win Over Spring Hill

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Jermaine Marshall recorded his first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and the Samford University Bulldogs (2-0) placed five players in double figures en route to an 86-69 victory over Spring Hill College (0-2) on Thursday, Nov. 11 at the Pete Hanna Center. Wesley Cardet, Jr. (14), Ques Glover (12), Jaron Rillie (10), and Jaden Campbell (10) joined Marshall in double digits.  Sam Davidson paced SHC with 18 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A pair of jumpers in the lane by Jermaine Marshall and a corner 3-pointer from Cooper Kaifes helped the Bulldogs build an early 7-2 lead.
  • Spring Hill used an 8-2 run over the next 3:23 to take a brief 10-9 lead at the 15:37 media timeout.  
  • Ques Glover's driving lay-up and free throw gave the Bulldogs the 12-10 lead with 14:30 to go.
  • Samford used a 6-2 run to build an 18-12 advantage at the 11:32 media timeout.
  • After the Bulldogs forced four straight turnovers by the Badgers, Quinn Richey turned in a quick 6-0 run by himself to extend Samford's lead to 10, 24-14 with 10:31 to play.  
  • John Abate's 12-foot jumper cut Samford's lead back to eight, 26-18, and ended a 14-2 run by the Bulldogs.
  • The two teams both went without a field goal for more than 3:00, as the Bulldogs maintained a 34-26 edge at the 3:40 media timeout.
  • After Spring Hill cut it to three, 34-31, Samford closed the half on a 14-3 run, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Jaden Campbell, to take a 48-34 edge into the locker room at the half.  
  • Marshall led the Bulldogs and all scorers with 12 points while Glover added 10 and Cardet nine at the break.
  • Samford kept the defensive intensity to start the second half, holding the Badgers scoreless for 4:14 while extending its lead to 21, 56-35, at the 15:46 media timeout.
  • The Badgers finally ended their field goal drought with a 3-pointer from Sam Davidson with 15:33 to go in the game.
  • SU maintained a 17-point advantage at the 11:59 media timeout despite going scoreless over the last 2:54 of the second half.
  • Spring Hill ran off a 9-2 run to cut into the Samford lead, 61-47, with 10:25 remaining.
  • Samford answered right back by making four of its' next five from the floor, including a pair by Marshall. The Bulldogs led by 18, 70-52, with 7:08 to go in the contest.
  • Fueled by 10 points from Jaron Rillie in the second frame, the Bulldogs built their largest lead of the night, 81-56, with 4:46 to play.
  • Samford salted away the remaining time to claim its' second consecutive victory, 86-69.           

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Samford forced 33 Spring Hill turnovers leading to a season-high 37 points.
  • The Bulldogs shot 43 percent (29-67) from the floor for the game including 32 percent (10-31) from 3-point range and 82 percent (18-22) from the line. Spring Hill connected on 45 percent (24-53) from the field for the night.
  • Both teams finished with 38 rebounds while Samford outscored the Badgers 38-30 in the paint.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Coach Bucky McMillan and the Bulldogs recognized all service members in attendance at Thursday's Veterans' Day game prior to tipoff.
  • The Bulldogs and Badgers were meeting for the 31st time in series history with the series with Samford owning a narrow 16-15 edge. The two teams have not met since Samford defeated SHC 90-64 on Dec. 17, 2011, at the Pete Hanna Center. The series dates to a pair of Spring Hill victories during the 1921-22 season.
  • Samford's non-starters continued their solid play, as the Bulldogs bench scored 47 points to Spring Hill's 10.

UP NEXT:
  • The Bulldogs travel to San Francisco, Calif., to start a two-game road swing on Monday, Nov. 15 against the Dons (1-0, 0-0 WCC) of the University of San Francisco. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. Central at The Sobrato Center.
