BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford volleyball team was eliminated from the Southern Conference Tournament with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 26-28, 21-25) loss to The Citadel in Saturday's semifinal round at the Pete Hanna Center.
The loss ends Samford season with a mark of 11-18. The Citadel improves to 13-11, and the team will take on Wofford in Sunday's championship match at 4 p.m. (CT) in the Pete Hanna Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In the first set, The Citadel jumped out to an 8-5 lead on a service ace by Kenzie Kellerman. Samford fought back to cut the lead to 13-12 on a kill by
Kayla Keshock. Samford knotted the score at 17-17 following a Citadel attack error. With The Citadel leading, 22-21, the visiting Bulldogs scored the next three points to take the set by a score of 25-21.
The Citadel started the second set hot as well, racing out to a 10-4 lead on a kill by Sharlissa De Jesus. Samford scored the next four points to cut the lead to 10-8 following a kill by
Lauren Deaton. Samford tied the score at 16-16, but The Citadel came back to take a 20-17 lead. With The Citadel leading, 21-18, Samford scored the next three points to tie the score at 21-21. With The Citadel leading, 22-21, Samford went on a 4-0 run to win the set, 25-22.
After The Citadel opened the third set with a 5-3 lead, Samford fought back to take a 12-7 lead after a service ace by Deaton. Samford stretched its lead to 21-14 after a kill by
Kate Wonus, forcing a Citadel timeout. Coming out of the timeout, The Citadel went on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 23-20, forcing a Samford timeout. The Citadel then tied the score at 24-24. The teams traded the next few points until The Citadel pulled out the 28-26 set win.
In the fourth set, Samford jumped out to a 6-2 lead following a kill by
Kenya McQuirter. The Citadel fought back to take a 13-10 lead after block assists by Alicia Roberts and Belle Hogan. The Citadel stretched its lead to 20-14 on a service ace by Kathleen Bula. The Citadel led, 23-18, but Samford fought back to cut the lead to 23-20, but The Citadel pulled out the 25-21 set win and the 3-1 match victory.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- McQuirter led Samford with 18 kills in the loss.
- Deaton and Sarah Hayes Farley had 10 kills apiece.
- Keshock and Kate Morgan shared the team lead in digs with 15 each.
- Keshock also had 39 assists in the match.
- De Jesus led The Citadel with 30 kills.
