Samford Falls At Colorado 81-48

BOULDER, Colo. – The Colorado women's basketball team remained undefeated with an 81-48 victory over Samford on Monday, Nov. 22 at the CU Events Center. The Buffaloes (4-0) placed four players in double figures led by Frida Formann with 13 points. The Bulldogs (1-4) were led by Natalie Armstrong's nine points and Annie Ramil finished with eight.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Offense was hard to come by in the first 2:30 of the game, as the Buffaloes and Bulldogs were tied at 4-4 with 7:32 to play in the first half.
  • Back-to-back layups by Peanut Tuitele gave the Buffaloes an 8-4 edge with 6:51 to play, but Samford's Annie Ramil answered right back with a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one, 8-7, with 6:11 to go in the quarter.
  • After another Tuitele layup and a short jumper in the lane by Quay Miller, Colorado held a 12-7 lead at the 4:56 media timeout.
  • Colorado turned up the defensive pressure out of the timeout, building its lead to seven, 18-11, with 2:02 to go in the first.
  • Samford cut it to four, 20-16, with a layup and free throw from Mallory Hampton at the end of the first quarter.
  • Shauntai Battle got the Bulldogs started with a 3-pointer to begin the second quarter, cutting the deficit to one, 20-19.
  • Andrea Cournoyer's first 3-pointer of the night tied the game at 22-22 at the 8:30 mark of the second.
  • Samford kept the offense coming, as Natalie Armstrong put the Bulldogs up 25-22 on a left-wing 3-pointer with 7:49 to go in the half.
  • Colorado stopped Samford's 9-2 run with an 11-2 run of its own to reclaim the lead, 33-27, at the 4:38 media timeout. Frida Formann scored eight of the 11 for the Buffaloes in the stretch.
  • A pair of Hampton free throws and a knifing layup from Armstrong got Samford back within two, 33-31, with 2:52 to play in the half.
  • A personal 6-0 run by Jaylyn Sherrod extended the Buffaloes lead to 41-31 with 1:04 to go in the second quarter.
  • Tuitele's jumper at the buzzer carried the Buffaloes into the locker room with a 43-31 lead.
  • Hollingshed started the third quarter the same way she began the game with a quick jumper in the paint. Colorado had its largest lead of the game, 15 points, 46-31 with 9:45 to play in the third.
  • Samford ended a 3:02 field goal drought, as Armstrong put home the layup off an assist by Hampton.
  • Leslie Finau's 3-pointer and layup on back-to-back possessions pushed the lead to 17 for Colorado, 51-34, with 6:39 to play in the quarter.
  • After a CU 3-pointer from Formann, Battle forced home a driving lay-in to stop the 8-0 run at the 4:33 media timeout, as Colorado led 54-36.
  • A pair of Tameiya Sadler free throws and a long 3-pointer pushed the CU advantage to 24, 60-36, with 3:36 remaining in the quarter.
  • Sadler drained her third 3-pointer of the quarter at the buzzer to lead 66-37 heading into the fourth.   
  • Olivia Ramil scored her first basket as a Bulldog with a jump hook in the lane with 8:51 to play in the game.
  • Colorado had extended its lead to 33 points, 75-42, at the 4:46 media timeout.
  • Mattie Hatcher's 3-pointer at the 3:10 mark of the fourth was just the third field goal of the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs.
  • Colorado closed out the final minutes of the game to claim the 81-48 victory.                          

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Colorado shot 52.8 (19-36) from the floor while Samford connected on 45.8 percent (11-24). Both teams made four 3-pointers with the Bulldogs hitting 4-of-7 and the Buffaloes 4-of-10.
  • Armstrong led the Bulldogs with seven points at the break with Cournoyer, Hampton, and Ramil adding five points each.
  • Formann led all scorers and the Buffaloes with 10 points while Hollingshed and Tuitele had eight points apiece.
  • Colorado finished the game shooting 46.9 percent on 30-of-64 attempts from the floor. The Buffaloes were 11-of-26 from 3-point range and 10-of-17 from the free throw line.
  • Samford closed the game hitting 16-of-45 shots from the floor for 35.6 percent. The Bulldogs were 5-of-14 from 3-point land and 11-of-17 at the line.
  • The Buffaloes forced 27 turnovers leading to 32 points.
  • Colorado outscored the Bulldogs 23-6 in the third quarter.
  • Tameiya Sadler (12), Mya Hollingshed (11), and Kiersten Blacksten (10) joined Formann in double figures. Hollingshed also had a team-high six rebounds.
  • Mattie Hatcher and Audra Leipold had four points each for the Bulldogs off the bench with Cournoyer, Hampton and Battle all finishing with five points.       

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Samford and Colorado Samford and Colorado were meeting for the third time on the hardwood. The Buffaloes are now 3-0 against the Bulldogs after Monday's win. CU won back-to-back meetings with Samford during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, including an 81-39 victory on Dec. 20, 2018, in their last meeting.
