BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team will be home once again this Sunday, Feb. 21 for a doubleheader against Jacksonville State. The first pitch is set for 12 p.m. at the Samford Softball Field.

The Bulldogs are currently sitting at 0-3 after opening up the season against No. 13 Kentucky. Their opponent, Jacksonville State, has an 0-1 record after being edged by ULM, 7-6, this past week in an eight-inning battle.

SERIES HISTORY:

• Competition between these two teams goes back to early 2002.
• Samford and JSU have faced each other a total of 28 times.

BULLDOGS TO WATCH:

• Mekhi Mayfield started the season strong with two home runs in the weekend series against Kentucky to go along with two hits, three runs, and four RBIs. In the field, she had nine catches, eight putouts and one assist.
• Timberlyn Shurbutt opened the season with one run on three hits, also hitting two doubles and driving in one run. The infielder totaled eight catches and had a team-high eight assists to help the defensive effort against the Wildcats.
• Ryan Brzozoski started in all three games against Kentucky, locking in five hits, including a double, and driving in two runs and scoring another.

 
JSU QUICK LOOKS:

• In their first and only game of the season so far, the Gamecocks were handed a 7-6 loss from Louisiana-Monroe after an eight-inning game.
• Megan Fortner was a key player for JSU offensively with two runs on two hits, also driving in one run. Defensively, she had four putouts at first base.
• Karsen Mosely had one run on four hits, while Shelby Newsome had two hits and drove in two runs for the Gamecocks.
• At the plate, Reagan Watkins pitched 7.0 innings, only allowing two runs on five hits, while having eight strikeouts at the plate.
