Bulldogs Notch Two Wins Against JSU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team rallied twice against Jacksonville State to lock in its first two wins of the season. The Bulldogs captured a 5-4 victory in game one, which was followed by 5-2 win in game two to close out the Sunday doubleheader at the Samford Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM1
  • The Gamecocks took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Jada Terry homered to center field, driving in Megan Fortner and Shelby Newsome.
  • Both teams remained scoreless for the next two innings until Samford finally made its way onto the board with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. With bases loaded for the Bulldogs, Ally Bigham was hit by a pitch, allowing for pinch runner, Ally Bigham, to score. Then JSU's pitcher walked Merritt Cahoon, bringing in Ansley Yantis for her first and only run of the game.
  • Samford would hold off the Gamecocks in the top of the fifth. This would be followed up by Whitney Hinton's 35th career home run, which ties the program career home run record, in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.
  • The game made its way into extra innings after neither team could add runs to its score sheet. JSU would then take a slight one-run advantage in the top of the ninth inning, but Samford responded with two runs of its own to capture a 5-4 victory. Whitney Hinton singled to center field, leading to a JSU error which allowed Mekhi Mayfield to score on the play. O'Neil Roberson was next up at bat, executed a squeeze bunt, and drove in Shurbutt for the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM2
  • It would be a scoreless game until the top of the fourth inning where JSU put up two runs to take the lead. Lauren Hunt singled to second base, allowing Caroline Lively to cross the plate for the Gamecocks. The second run would come after Megan Fortner doubled to right center, driving in Shelby Newsome for her first run of game two.
  • Samford found their way on the board in the next inning with a run from Mekhi Mayfield. The Bulldogs then showed a strong defensive effort in the top of the sixth, holding the Gamecocks to a scoreless inning.
  • The Bulldogs put the game away in the bottom of the sixth after Timberlyn Shurbutt hit her first home run of the season to drive in Makhi Mayfield, Amanda Briskin and Ansley Yantis.
 
IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Abby Swaney pitched all 9.0 innings in game one of the doubleheader, earning her first win of the season. Swaney recorded 11 strikeouts, while giving up four runs on four hits.
  • The losing pitcher was JSU's Alexus Jimmerson who pitched 4.1 innings for the Gamecocks. She had three strikeouts and gave up three runs on two hits.
  • Emily Barnett was the winning pitcher for Samford in game two with 3.2 innings at the plate. She saw 10 at bats and earned two strikeouts, while keeping a clean slate in the hits and runs categories.
  • Lexi Androlevich was the losing pitcher for JSU after facing 28 at bats. She gave up five runs on eight hits for the Gamecocks.
 
NOTABLES:
  • Whitney Hinton earned her 35th career home run to tie the Samford record. She totaled one run on three hits and had two RBIs in the two games against JSU.
  • Timberlyn Shurbutt played a key role in Samford's success with two runs, one hit, and four RBIs in the both games combined. One of the two runs was her first home run of the season for the Bulldogs. Defensively, she had 10 assists and one putout.
  • Ally Bigham led Samford on the defensive front with a total of 21 putouts, followed by Kathryn Jackson with 16 putouts from behind the plate.
