TROY, Ala. – While the Samford softball team suffered two losses against Troy on Wednesday night,
Whitney Hinton hit her 36th career home run to break the program record.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM1
- Samford took an early 1-0 lead over the Trojans in the top of the second after Kolby Holcombe singled up the middle, advancing Amanda Briskin to third and driving in Ansley Yantis. Mekhi Mayfield followed up with a single to right field, driving in Briskin for a 2-0 lead.
- Troy responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second after Ashlan Ard doubled to left field, allowing for Anslee Finch to advance to third and Kelly Horne to score. This was followed up by another run for the Trojans with Logan Calhoun singling up the middle to drive in Finch to tie the game at 2-2.
- The Bulldogs headed into extra innings with two runs and six hits, while Troy earned two runs and four hits before heading into the top of the eighth.
- With the game in the bottom of the ninth, Troy's Kaylee Chapman singled up the middle to reach base. Logan Calhoun then singled through the left side to push Chapman to second. Jade Sinness singled to right field to make the bases loaded for the Trojans. Candela Figueroa closed out the game for the Troy after singling to right field to drive in Chapman for the game-winning run.

HOW IT HAPPENED | G2
- Whitney Hinton started off game two with an inside of the park home run after hitting the ball off the left field wall. She is the new Samford softball career holder in home runs with 36 total.
- Troy evened the score in the bottom of the first inning with Kelly Horne singling up the middle to drive in Candela Figueroa. The Trojans added on two more runs to the scoreboard in the same inning after Ashlan Ard singled up the middle as well to drive in Horne and Katie Webb.
- In the next inning, Troy continued to distance themselves from Samford by adding on two more runs for a 5-1 lead. Katie Lively singled up the middle to drive in Figueroa and Sinness.
- The next runs for the Trojans would come in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mia Jenkins doubled down the left line to drive in Figueroa and Sinness to lock in Troy's 7-1 win over the Bulldogs.
IN THE CIRCLE:
- Abby Swaney had her fourth start of the season in game one of the doubleheader. In her 5.0 innings pitched, she faced 21 batters and gave up two runs on four hits while recording three strikeouts.
- Troy's Leanna Johnson earned the win in game one for the Trojans, while Emily Barnett took the loss for Samford. Barnett pitched 3.0 innings, giving up one run on six hits while earning one strikeout.
- Megan Robertson started in the circle for the Bulldogs in game two, only pitching one complete inning and giving up three runs on four hits. She received her first loss of the season.
- Taylor DeCelles pitched 4.0 innings for Samford in game two, earning two strikeouts while giving up four runs on six hits. McKenna Gillespie closed out game two for Samford as she made her second appearance this season. She pitched 1.0 innings and gave up zero runs on one hit.
- Leanna Johnson earned another win in game two for Troy after pitching 5.0 innings, while only giving up one run on five hits for the Trojans.
NOTABLES:
- Whitney Hinton hit her 36th career home run to break the program record. In both games fo the doubleheader, she totaled one run on two hits and one RBI. So far this season, the standout senior has seen 25 at bats, recording seven hits, four runs, three RBIs, and two home runs.
- Ansley Yantis had one of the three runs for the Bulldogs, while Amanda Briskin added the other with one run on three hits in both games.
UP NEXT:
- The Samford softball team returns home to host the Samford Softball Tournament this coming weekend. The Bulldogs will face Northern Iowa on Friday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 27 against Louisiana-Monroe at 1 p.m. and Northern Iowa once again at 4 p.m. Competition will then be wrapped up for Samford on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. with its final game against Louisiana-Monroe.
