Softball Goes Undefeated On The Weekend After Four-Straight Wins

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team wrapped up a perfect weekend with four-straight wins after defeating Louisiana-Monroe once against with a score of 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the Samford Softball Field.
 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Louisiana-Monroe would be the first team on the board with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Bulldogs wasted no time taking and keeping the lead with runs in the bottom of the second, third, and fourth innings.
  • Abby Dorsett earned the first run for Samford after pinch-running for O'Neil Roberson. Kathryn Jackson had a sacrifice bunt to advance Dorsett to second. After Briskin struck out at the plate, Kolby Holcombe singled to left field to drive in Dorsett to get the Bulldogs on the board.
  • Two more runs came in the bottom of the second for Samford after Timberlyn Shurbutt and Whitney Hinton both doubled, allowing for Hinton to drive in Shurbutt to tie the game. Ryan Brzozoski then singled to right center to score Hinton for the 3-2 lead.
  • The final two runs of the game would come in the bottom of the fourth. Whitney Hinton singled to left center, advancing Abby Martin to second while driving in Amanda Briskin. Ansley Yantis followed this up with a single to left center to score Abby Martin after Yantis advanced to second off a ULM throw.
 
IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Abby Swaney pitched 1.0 innings for the Bulldogs before leaving the circle due to injury. She allowed two runs on three hits and struck out one Warhawk batter.
  • Emily Barnett pitched 6.0 innings in relief. She allowed zero runs on three hits and struck out four batters, earning her fourth win this season.
  • Kassidy Giddens received the loss for ULM, giving up four runs on six hits while striking out two Bulldogs.
 
NOTABLES:
  • Whitney Hinton led Samford offensively with one run on two hits and two RBI's. She now leads the team with a total of eight runs and 14 hits on the season.
  • Timberlyn Shurbutt also had one run on two hits against the Warhawks. In 16 at bats so far this season, the junior has locked in three runs, 11 hits, and four RBIs.

  • The Samford softball team will head to Oxford, Mississippi to participate in the Ole Miss Tournament on March 5, 7 and 7. The Bulldogs will first face the Rebels in a doubleheader on Friday, Mar. 5 with the first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
