Softball Records No-Hitter In Saturday Doubleheader Split

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Led by Taylor DeCelles and Emily Barnett in the circle, Samford topped Southern Illinois, 2-0, in game one to record the first combined no-hitter since 2016. However, the Bulldogs struggled to keep their momentum going in the bottom of the sixth in the second game and dropped a 9-6 decision on day two of the Blazer Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM1
  • It was a back-and-forth affair between the two teams until Timberlyn Shurbutt stepped up to the plate in the top of the fifth and homered to left field to drive in pinch runner Abigail Dorsett for a 2-0 lead.
  • The sixth inning was three up, three down for both teams to push the game into the top of the seventh. Samford was unable to add a run to the board, however, the Bulldogs secured its victory with a strikeout from Emily Barnett to close out the game.
  • Samford recorded two runs on seven hits while Southern Illinois could not produce anything at the plate to give the Bulldogs their first no hitter since 2016. Samford also handed the Salukis's their first loss of the season after they won 16-straight games.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM2
  • Timberlyn Shurbutt would get Samford on the board first in the top of the third inning after she slugged her second home run of the day to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.
  • Ball State responded in a big way in the bottom of the same inning with four runs of their own to take the lead. With the bases loaded, Amaia Daniel singled to drive in Kennedy Wynn and Delanie Johnson to split the score at 2-1. Haley Dominique followed up with a double to left field to further Ball State's lead to 4-1 after she drove in Daniel and Lissy.
  • The Bulldogs put the game within one run in the top of the fourth. Jordan Moore doubled to center field to score Lindsey Nelson and Mekhi Mayfield.
  • Two more runs would come for Samford in top of the fifth to regain the lead. The Bulldogs would take advantage of a Cardinal wild pitch to score Timberlyn Shurbutt and advance Amanda Briskin to third base. Ryan Brzozoski then stepped up to the plate and singled to center field, allowing for Briskin to make it home to put the score at 5-4.
  • Samford would tag on another run in the sixth inning after one out was on the board and Timberlyn Shurbutt executed a sac fly to drive in Ansley Yantis.
  • The bottom of sixth is where the tides started to turn as Ball State knotted the game at 6-6 with two runs after Payton doubled to center field to drive in two runs. The Cardinals brought in three additional runs with an RBI single and two RBI double to take the win.
 
IN THE CIRCLE:
  • In game one, Taylor DeCelles and Emily Barnett earned a combined no-hitter for the first time since the 2016 SoCon Tournament vs. UNCG. DeCelles received the win after 5.0 innings pitched while striking out four batters. Emily Barnett pitched 2.0 innings in relief and recorded her second save of the season.
  • Emily Barnett would start in the circle for game two and pitched 2.0 innings. She allowed four runs on five hits and registered one walk after 12 batters faced.
  • Taylor DeCelles relieved Barnett and pitched 3.1 innings for the Bulldogs. She received her third loss of the season after giving up three runs on four hits.
  • McKenna Gillespie closed out game two with 0.2 innings pitched and allowed two runs on two hits in her fourth appearance in the circle this season.

NOTABLES:
  • Timberlyn Shurbutt had a standout performance on day two of the Blazer Classic. She had a crucial home run in game one to give Samford the win, while hitting another dinger in game two to put the Bulldogs on the board. Overall, the third baseman registered three runs on four hit, one double, and four RBIs.
  • Freshman Jordan Moore also contributed offensively with three hits and two RBIs. She also had two doubles on the day with one of them driving in two runs for Samford.

  • The Bulldogs will face Southern Illinois one more time to close out the Blazer Classic on Sunday, Mar. 14 at 11 a.m. at Mary Bowers Field.
