Samford Closes Out Blazer Classic Against Southern Illinois

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Despite capturing a win over Southern Illinois earlier in the tournament, the Samford softball ball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Salukis' on Sunday afternoon at Mary Bowers Field to close out the Blazer Classic.
 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • It was a quick start for Southern Illinois as they put up their first run of the game with Maddy Vermejan stealing home in the top of the first inning. The Salukis' struck again moments later with a home run from Tori Schullian for a 3-0 lead as she drove in Jenny Jansen at second.
  • The Bulldogs would tally on six hits for the remainder of the game, having their best opportunity to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning after Merritt Cahoon singled to left field to get on base, who was then pinch ran for by Abby Dorsett. Kolby Holcombe was next at the plate, pinch hitting for Ansley Yantis, and reached first base on an error which advanced Dorsett to third. With two players on base and no outs, Samford was still unable to make a comeback after three-straight strikeouts for Southern Illinois to claim the win.  
IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Abby Swaney received her fourth loss of the season after giving up three runs on one hit in just 0.1 innings pitched. The freshman pitcher now sits at 4-4 on the season.
  • Taylor DeCelles entered the circle in relief, pitching the remainder of the game for the Bulldogs. She allowed no runs on two hits, three walks, and struck out four batters.
  • Carlee Jo Clark earned the win for Southern Illinois after pitching 6.0 innings for the Salukis, allowing zero runs on six hits and striking out six Bulldogs at the plate.  
 
NOTABLES:
  • Timberlyn Shurbutt recorded a pair of singles in the bottom of the third and fifth to lead Samford in hits. Shurbutt closed out the weekend with three runs on seven hits, while recording two home runs for a total of three this season.
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Samford softball team will host SEC opponent, Mississippi State, for a single game on Wednesday, Mar. 17. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. at the Samford Softball Field.
