BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team earned a 4-2 win at cross-town rival UAB Friday afternoon.

"Today was a good win for us," Samford head coach Rahim Esmail said. "UAB is a tough team and we did a good job getting off to a good start in the doubles point. We had some tough matches up top in the lineup – Rossouw had a high quality match at number one. Overall, we competed well today."
 
With the win, Samford improves to 9-6. UAB falls to 5-8 with the loss.
 
Samford swept the three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Victor Chaw and Jim Hendrikx defeated Roman Postolka and Michal Lusovsky, 6-3. On the No. 2 doubles court, Tomas Santantonio and Eladio Fabregas defeated Daniel Janko and Vojtech Podzemny, 6-2. At No. 3 doubles, Rossouw Norval and Mohammed Ali Bellalouna earned a 6-3 win over Giovani Pasini and Thanos Spyropoulos.
 
In singles, Samford earned wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5, with the match at No. 6 being unfinished. At No. 3 singles, Fabregas defeated Spyropoulos, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0. On the No. 4 singles court, Hendrikx earned a 6-3, 5-0 (ret.) win over Podzemny. On the No. 5 court, Santantonio defeated Janko, 6-3, 6-3.
 
Samford will play at ETSU Sunday. The match is set for an 11 a.m. (CT) start from Johnson City, Tenn.
