OXFORD, Miss. – The Samford softball team split a pair of contests against Indiana State on its second day at the Ole Miss Tournament with an extra-inning defeat, 6-5, in game one and a 3-2 victory over the Sycamores in game two at Ole Miss Softball Complex.
THE BASICS
GAME 1

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM1
- Indiana State would open up the game with two runs in the top of first and second inning to gain an early 2-0 advantage, but Samford would respond with four runs of its own in the bottom of the second to take the lead.
- With two outs on the board, Kathryn Jackson singled through the left side to get on base. This would be followed by Amanda Briskin singling to first base to advance Jackson to second. Merritt Cahoon then singled to short stop to advance Briskin to second and score Jackson for the first run of the day for the Bulldogs.
- Mekhi Mayfield was next on deck for Samford, singling up the middle to put Merritt Cahoon on third base and to drive in Briskin to tie the game. Timberlyn Shurbutt would put Samford on top with a double to right center, allowing for Mayfield and Cahoon to make it home for the Bulldogs.
- The Sycamores put the game within one in the top of the sixth after Cassie Thomerson singled to left field to drive in Danielle Henning. After a fly out to left field and a strikeout from Taylor DeCelles, Samford continued with its lead into the bottom of the sixth.
- With the bases fully loaded and only one out, Timberlyn Shurbutt executed a sac fly to center field to drive in pinch runner, Abby Dorsett, to further Samford's lead to 5-3.
- That lead would not last for long as Indiana State tied it up at 5-5 in the top of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded for the Sycamores, Mycaela Miller singled to center field, allowing for two runners to cross home plate for Indiana State.
- Due to the international rule, Kaylee Barrett was placed on second for the Sycamores to start off the top of the eighth inning. Leslie Sims grounded out to third base, advancing Barret to third which was followed by sacrifice bunt from Bella Peterson to score Barrett to edge the Bulldogs 6-5 in game one.
GAME 2

Records: Samford (7-8) | Indiana State (4-7)
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM2
- No runs would come for either team until the top of the fifth after Kolby Holcombe singled to right center to drive in Ryan Brzozoski for a 1-0, Samford lead. This would be followed by two ground outs from Indiana State and strikeout from Abby Swaney to push the game into the sixth inning.
- Another run would come for the Bulldogs in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded and only one out, Ryan Brzozoski executed a sac fly to right field to drive in Ansley Yatnis for a 2-0 lead.
- The Sycamores were not phased as they tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth with two runs of their own. Peterson tripled to right field to drive in Sims, while Guerico followed with a bunt to drive in Peterson to put the score at 2-2.
- In the final inning, the Bulldogs had one out on the board. Timberlyn Shurbutt made her way to the plate and hit a sac fly to center field to drive in Briskin. This would be the final run of the game, allowing Samford to walk away with a 3-2 victory over Indiana State.
IN THE CIRCLE:
- Emily Barnett pitched 5.1 innings for the Bulldogs in game one. She allowed three runs on eight hits while recording five strikeouts. Taylor DeCelles also saw time in the circle with 2.2 innings pitched. She is now 0-2 on the season with the loss after giving up three runs on four hits.
- Abby Swaney earned her third win of the season in game two after pitching all 7.0 innings for Samford. She allowed just two runs on six hits after 30 batters faced.
NOTABLES:
- Timberlyn Shurbutt led the Bulldogs offensively in game one with two hits and three RBIs. The third baseman also had two putouts and five assists out on the diamond.
- Meritt Cahoon and Mekhi Mayfield also had steady performances in game one with both players registering one run on two hits and one RBI.
- In game two, Ryan Brzozoski logged one run on one hit and one RBI. Timberlyn Shurbutt and Kolby Holcombe also had one RBI each to help Samford lock in a 3-2 victory.

- The Samford softball team will wrap up the Ole Miss Tournament with a single game on Sunday, Mar. 7 at 9:30 a.m. against North Dakota State.
