Bulldogs Battle Mississippi State In Midweek Matchup

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –  The Samford softball team battled SEC opponent, Mississippi State, on Tuesday evening, ultimately dropping an 8-5 decision to the fellow Bulldogs at the Samford Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Samford took the field and started strong with three-straight outs for a quick top of the first. In the bottom half of the inning, Ryan Brzozoski would knock a ball to deep left center for a double and to drive in Whitney Hinton on first base for the early 1-0 lead.
  • The fellow Bulldogs of Mississippi State wasted no time getting on the board after Carter Spexarth and Jackie McKenna both hit home runs to give MSU a slight one-run advantage in the top of the second.
  • Mississippi State would extend its lead in the top of the third with Fa Leilua singling to left field and advancing to second after Samford attempted to tag Montana Davidson out at home. However, Davidson would be ruled safe at the plate for a 3-1 lead.
  • Another run would come for MSU in top of the next inning after Montana Davidson locked in a RBI single after she drove a ball out to right field to score Jackie McKenna.
  • After two walks and a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning, Samford would put the game back within one run with Timberlyn Shurbutt singling to left field to bring home Jordan Moore and Amanda Briskin. However, MSU responded with three runs on two outs in the top of the seventh to further distance themselves from the Bulldogs.
  • Samford would attempt to kickstart a late rally in the bottom of the seventh with Ryan Brzozoski and Lindsey Nelson both scoring off a Mississippi State errors with only one out on the board. The Bulldogs efforts would not be enough as MSU's pitcher, Alyssa Loza, threw back-to-back strikes to close out the game for an 8-5 victory over Samford.
 
IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Taylor DeCelles received her eighth loss of the season after pitching a complete 7.0 innings for the Bulldogs. The southpaw allowed eight runs on eight hits while striking out four batters at the plate.
  • Grace Fagan entered the game in relief for Mississippi State, pitching 5.0 innings to earn her second win of the season. Fagan gave up two runs on five hits while recording three walks and striking out seven batters.  
 
NOTABLES:
  • Timberlyn Shurbutt drove in two runs on the night to now lead the Bulldogs in RBIs this season with a total of 22. Shurbutt has played in all 34 games for Samford, registering 16 runs on 33 hits, 10 doubles, and six home runs.
  • Ryan Brzozoski produced three hits on four at bats and drove in one run, while Amanda Briskin collected one run on two hits. Brzozoski now holds a .344 batting average after 33 hits in 96 at bats this season.
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Samford softball team will head on the road to compete against Jacksonville State in a single game on Thursday, Apr. 15. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m. at University Field.
