GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford softball team competed against UNC Greensboro in a Saturday doubleheader at the UNCG Softball Stadium, falling to the Spartans by a 3-0 decision in game one followed by 1-0 loss in game two for UNCG to clinch the series.
THE BASICS
GAME 1

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM1
- It was a battle of the pitchers for the first five innings with both teams only giving up two hits each before entering the bottom of the sixth. With one out on the board and bases loaded for the Spartans, Jordan Gontram singled to left field to bring home Maycin Brown for the first run of the game.
- Samford would add another out to the board, but UNCG capitalized off a Bulldog fielding error to score Hannah Kincer and Ashley Gontram to push its lead to 3-0. Makenna Matthijs was next at the plate for the Spartans and struck a ball out to center field where Mekhi Mayfield made the catch to put Samford back at the plate in the top of the seventh inning.
- Cahoon walked in the leadoff spot to get on base for the Bulldogs, however, this would be followed by three-straight outs for Samford to close out game one for a 3-0 loss against UNCG.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM2
- It would be another low scoring contest for Samford and UNC Greensboro in game two with both teams unable to find runs in the first four innings. The Bulldogs and Spartans registered three hits each before UNCG scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth.
- Brooklynn Maxwell doubled down the left line to open the inning, which was followed by a sacrifice bunt from Melanie Darges to advance Maxwell to third base. In the next play, Makenna Matthijs executed a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Maxwell for a 1-0 victory to clinch the series.
IN THE CIRCLE:
- In her 13th start of the season, right-handed pitcher, Emily Barnett, received her seventh loss after throwing a total of 6.0 innings for Samford. Barnett allowed one earned run on three hits, while striking out 5 Spartans at the plate in 22 at bats.
- Taylor DeCelles earned the second loss of the day in the circle for the Bulldogs after pitching a complete 6.0 innings. DeCelles gave up one run on four hits and tallied three strikeouts after 25 batters faced.
NOTABLES:
- Timberlyn Shurbutt led Samford at the plate with three hits on the day, one being a double in the top of the sixth inning in game one. Shurbutt continues to lead the Bulldogs in the doubles category with a total of 11 this season.

- The Samford softball team will compete against the Spartans once again in a single game on Sunday, Apr. 25 at 12 p.m. to close out the series at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
