CULLOWHEE, N.C. – On Saturday afternoon at the Catamount Softball Complex, the Samford softball team dropped its series finale to Western Carolina, 5-3, to close out the weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Timberlyn Shurbutt started the game in dominant fashion after she hit a home run to left center in the leadoff spot to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead, but Western Carolina answered right back with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the first. The Catamounts would score on a Samford error to tie the game and would take the lead after Kailey McNeil singled to right center to drive in Lindsay Perillo.
- The game would see its second tie with Timberlyn Shurbutt executing a sac fly to right field to advance Ansley Yantis to third and bring home pinch runner Abigail Dorsett in the top of the second. However, the Catamounts would regain their lead in the bottom of the same inning with a home run of their own after Savannah Baldwin hit a dinger over the left field fence.
- Merritt Cahoon notched the game at 3-3 after the sophomore doubled to left center to drive in Whitney Hinton in the top of the fourth, but Western Carolina would strike again in the bottom half of the inning after Samantha Reele singled up the middle on a 1-2 count to score Jeralynn Wells and Claudia Riddle. These two runs would give the Catamounts a 5-3 victory and their fourth conference win this season.
IN THE CIRCLE:
- Emily Barnett suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs on six hits, two walks, and two strikeouts over 3.1 innings of work. For the weekend, Barnett pitched a complete 7.1 innings for the Bulldogs.
- Taylor DeCelles entered the game in relief, pitching a total of 2.2 innings for Samford. DeCelles gave up no runs on two hits and registered two strikeouts after 10 batters faced.
NOTABLES:
- Timberlyn Shurbutt smacked her fifth home run of the season and drove in an additional run for a team-high two RBIs in game three. Shurbutt now holds a .308 batting average for the Bulldogs after 28 total hits in 91 at bats.
UP NEXT:
- The Samford softball team will return back to Birmingham, Alabama for its next weekend series against Furman starting on Saturday, Apr. 10 at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader at the Samford Softball Field.
