ORLANDO, Fla. –
Victor Chaw and
Jim Hendrikx of the Samford men's tennis team dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Siim Troost and Vlad Lobak of Minnesota in the first round of play at the NCAA Doubles Championship Tournament Monday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
The match opened up with Minnesota snagging the first point of the set, but Samford responded with a point of its own after
Jim Hendrikx had a sharp shot in the front position that forced the Gophers to hit their return out of bounds to tie the set at 1-1. Minnesota reclaimed its lead with a well-executed shot down the line and eventually doubled the score in the next frame, 3-1. Troost and Lobak continued to press offensively on their half of the court, locking in the next three points to take the first set over the Bulldogs by a final score of 6-1.
Both teams headed into the second set with Samford taking the early lead after the Minnesota pair was unable to return
Victor Chaw's clean shot down the middle. The Gophers were quick to tie the set at 1-1 in the next frame and officially took a 2-1 lead soon thereafter. Vlad Lobak's serving enhanced Minnesota's lead to 3-1, but the Bulldog duo battled back in the following frame to put the set back within one point. Both teams traded points to put the score at 4-3, however, the Gophers solidified their win after picking up back-to-back points to advance to the Round of 16.
