McAfoos Promoted To Assistant AD

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Athletics Department has promoted Jon McAfoos to Assistant Director of Athletics for Broadcast and Digital Media, it was announced Friday afternoon.

"It's always exciting to be able to reward individuals for their hard work and we're thrilled to promote Jon McAfoos to Assistant AD for Broadcast and Digital Media," Senior Associate AD for External Affairs Matt Jones said. "Since coming to Samford, Jon has continued to set the standard for broadcast production in our league while helping to shape the creative content and stories our unit produces for all 17 programs. In his new role, Jon will have an even larger presence in our operation as we work to grow the Samford Athletics brand."

McAfoos recently wrapped up his sixth year with Samford Athletics. He previously served as the Director of Broadcast Services. In addition to his broadcast duties, McAfoos will now oversee social media, creative video and photography.

"I'm very appreciative of the support our athletics administration has given me over the years, and I want to thank Matt Jones and all of our senior leadership team for trusting me in this new role," McAfoos said. "I'm excited to continue to grow our broadcast department, while also taking on a bigger role in leading our incredible digital/social team."

In his first year, McAfoos helped launch Samford's first-ever in-house broadcast on an ESPN platform, a 45-16 win for the football team over Central Arkansas on September 3, 2015, that aired live on ESPN3. That year, Samford produced a total of 20 ESPN broadcasts, a number that has subsequently increased in each season.

Today, Samford averages over 120 broadcasts on ESPN platforms each year. Additionally, McAfoos helped to build two production control rooms that allow the department to broadcast multiple events at the same time.

McAfoos and his staff now produce broadcasts for every women's soccer, volleyball, football, men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball home game, as well as select home matches for men's and women's tennis. The broadcast team also produces certain outside events held on Samford's campus.

In addition to live events, McAfoos produces the Chris Hatcher Show each fall, and also produces and hosts the Samford Sports Wrap-Up and the Student-Athlete Spotlight, which are weekly features highlighting Samford's student-athletes, coaches and staff.

Prior to joining Samford, McAfoos worked two seasons in Minor League Baseball, serving as a Production Assistant with the Birmingham Barons (Chicago White Sox Double-A) and Quad Cities River Bandits (Houston Astros Single-A). Other live production and broadcasting work includes events with Down in Front Productions, UAB, Troy, Georgia State, and Jacksonville State, as well as the SEC, Conference USA, SoCon, Birmingham Bulls (SPHL), Birmingham Legion FC (USL), and Birmingham Iron (AAF).

A native of Warren, Pennsylvania, McAfoos earned a BA in Broadcast Communications from Westminster (Pa.) College in 2011, where he worked extensively with the campus radio and cable stations, both in front of the camera and behind it.
