Bulldogs Extinguish Blazers 2-1 in the Red Mountain Rivalry


BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University Soccer team built a 2-0 halftime lead en route to a 2-1 victory over the University of Alabama-Birmingham in the annual Red Mountain Rivalry on Thursday, Aug. 26 at the Samford Soccer & Track Stadium. The Bulldogs improved to 1-1-1 on the year while the Blazers slipped to 1-2.

KEY PLAYS
  • Taylor Yount scored on a perfectly placed header to the upper right corner to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the 15th minute of the first half. The goal was the first of the season for the Cape Coral, Fla., native. Mary Raymond provided the assist.
  • In the 29th minute, Alyssa Frazier increased the lead to 2-0 for the Bulldogs with a howitzer to the upper right of the goal from just outside the box. Raymond delivered her second assist of the night.
  • UAB had its best opportunity to score in the 56th minute off a shot from Asha Zuniga, but Samford goalkeeper Morgan McAslan was there to defend the attack to keep the Blazers' deficit at 2-0.
  • The Blazers bagged their lone goal of the night off of a deflection by Jessica Wheeler in the 82nd minute to cut the Samford lead in half, 2-1.

  • The Bulldogs connected on 12 shots in the match with six shots on goal and four corners.
  • UAB collected eight shots, one on goal, with five corner kicks.
  • UAB's Eve Beyer closed the match with three saves.
  • Frazier closed the night with three shots, two on goal, including her first goal of the season in 53 minutes of action.
  • Raymond, who also posted two shots, closed the match with two assists that led to goals by Yount and Frazier.
  • Laura Zemberyova delivered three shots on the night to lead UAB.

  • Samford and UAB have competed against each other nine times with Samford leading, 4-3-2. In their last meeting, the Bulldogs and Blazers tied 1-1 (2OT).
