BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Volleyball team picked up its fourth-straight win with a 3-0 sweep over Mercer on "Dig Orange" night.
Samford Improves to 10-9 overall and 5-2 in Southern Conference play while Mercer drops to 6-13 overall and 2-5 in conference action.
The Bulldogs were able to raise $3,185 to help aid in the fight against blood cancer and carry on the legacy of Caroline Neisler, a former Samford volleyball player who passed away in 2013 just weeks after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
Kenya McQuirter led the Bulldogs with 17 kills and a .364 hitting percentage while
Lauren Deaton finished just one kill shy of a double-double with nine kills and a game-high 13 digs.
Kayla Keshock (19) and
Samantha Horn (16) combined for 35 of the Bulldogs' 37 assists while
Kate Morgan added 12 digs and a pair of service aces.
Set one saw the Bulldogs and Bears battle back and forth, until a pair of kills by
Gracie Lynn Butler and
Greer Golden spearheaded a two-point swing that put Samford on top 18-15. Mercer fought back to trim their deficit to 19-18, but a late 4-0 run helped put the Bulldogs up 23-19 and paved the way for a 25-20 set-one victory.
In set two, the Bulldogs took advantage of a 6-0 run to jump out to a 15-8 lead over the Bears. Samford continued to apply the pressure, going up by a tally of 20-10 and then 22-13 before eventually claiming the set 25-18.
A 4-0 run by the Bulldogs in set three put them up 10-5, followed by a 3-0 run to up their advantage to 14-7. After a 5-0 run by Mercer trimmed Samford's lead to 14-12, the Bulldogs took all of the momentum right back with a 6-0 run to grab a 20-12 lead that gave them enough separation to cruise to a 25-16 set-three victory.
For the third time in four contests, the Bulldogs posted a hitting percentage of over .350 at .361. Samford hit .372 in set one, .227 in set two, and .438 in set three. The Bulldogs additionally committed their second-fewest number of attack errors in a game this season with just 13.
The Bulldogs will return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 15 for a 5:00 p.m. matchup with Wofford from the Pete Hanna Center.
