Stingy Defensive Effort Leads Volleyball to 3-0 Sweep Over UNCG

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Volleyball Team matched a season-high with 10 blocks while holding UNC Greensboro to a .027 hitting percentage in a 3-0 sweep over the Spartans on Friday.

The win marks the Bulldogs' sixth in a row and improves them to 12-9 overall and 7-2 in Southern Conference play. UNCG drops to 8-14 overall and 2-7 in SoCon action.

Greer Golden and Kayla Keshock both led the Bulldogs with four total blocks each, with Keshock also adding a team-best 18 assists and Golden smashing seven kills. Kate Wonus and Gracie Lynn Butler both tallied three total blocks and eight kills apiece.

Lauren Deaton and Andie Salasky both notched 10 digs, with Deaton also recording eight kills. Kate Morgan led all players with 19 digs, while Kenya McQuirter finished with seven kills and four digs. Freshman Samantha Horn added 16 assists.

The Bulldogs rattled off a 7-0 run in the first set to take a 15-7 lead and would eventually lead 22-12 after a kill from Deaton. From there, the Bulldogs were able to cruise to a 25-14 set-one win.

In set two, the Bulldogs were finally able to create separation with a 5-0 run that put them up 20-15, followed by a 4-0 run to make their advantage 24-18. The Spartans responded with a 6-0 run to tie the match at 24, but Samford was able to take advantage of a UNCG service error and attacking error to score the next two points and claim the set 26-24.

The Bulldogs used a pair of 4-0 runs to take control of set three, with the first one putting them up 14-6 and the next giving them an 18-8 advantage. The Spartans fought back to trail just 20-13, but a point-for-point exchange the rest of the set would give way to a 25-17 final score in set three.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 22 when they host Western Carolina at 5:00 p.m. for Senior Night from the Pete Hanna Center.
