Samford Women Finish Second In SoCon, McGinnis Named Men’s Freshman Of The Year

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Samford women's team finished second and the men came in fifth at the Southern Conference Cross-Country Championships Sunday morning at Johns Island County Park. Andrew McGinnis of the men's team was named the Men's Freshman of the Year.
"I am so proud of both our men and women," Samford cross-country coach Chad Balyo said. "Our men, despite being young and inexperienced over the 8K distance, competed tough. I am excited for freshman Andrew McGinnis who took home the Freshman of the Year award. The women have been consistently solid all year and today was no different. Taking home second behind a distance-focused Furman program for a fourth year in a row is something our program takes great pride in."
In the women's 6K race, the Bulldogs scored 62 points, coming in behind champion Furman with 15 points. In the men's 8K race, Samford tallied 123 points, placing fifth. Furman won the men's race as well with 27 points, followed by ETSU (55), Mercer (100) and UNC Greensboro (101).
Individually, the Samford women's team boasted two top-10 finishers in the 78-runner field. McKenzie Hogue, who was named first team All-SoCon, placed seventh with a time of 17:20.6. Gabbie Hoots, a second-team All-SoCon and All-Freshman team honoree, came in 10th, running the course in 17:36.8. Ashley Walker, also named second-team All-SoCon, placed 14th with a time of 18:03.1, while Harper McGowan finished 15th at 18:04.2.
On the men's side, second-team All-SoCon member Jeb Jones led the way, finishing 11th with a time of 24:40.5. McGinnis, the league's Freshman of the Year, placed 15th, running the course in 25:02.8. Caleb Scheffler, an All-Freshman team honoree, finished 31st at 25:47.9, while fellow All-Freshman team member Harrison Siegel placed 32nd with a time of 25:48.8.
Samford will next compete in the NCAA South Regional Championships on Nov. 11, in Huntsville, Ala.
"We have the potential to be a top-10 program at the NCAA South Regional Championships," Balyo said. "I look forward to seeing what we can do on Nov. 11 in Huntsville."
