Samford Football Welcomes Wofford To Seibert Stadium

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Following a thrilling 34-27 victory at Furman, the 13th-ranked Samford football team returns home to play host to the Wofford Terriers in another critical Southern Conference showdown. 
  
The all-dog matchup is slated for a 12 p.m. CT kickoff and can be streamed on ESPN+ where Curt Bloom, Damian Michell and Eric Biancalana will have the call.

After falling behind 10-0 at the end of the first quarter, Samford scored 20 unanswered points in the second frame that propelled the Bulldogs to a 34-27 victory over the Furman Paladins last time out. 
  
The Bulldogs and Terriers are meeting for the 20th time in program history. Samford holds a decisive 15-4 lead in the series. Samford has topped Wofford in seven-straight meetings and has won nine of the last ten matchups. 
  
East, Thomas Earn Honors
Following the dub over Furman, Nathan East was named FCS National Defensive Player of the Week by Stats Perform and SoCon Defensive Player of the Week. East, a graduate linebacker, tallied a team-leading 10 tackles in Samford's 34-27 win at Furman on Saturday. The McCalla, Alabama native also forced two fumbles with two quarterback hurries, a pass break up and a sack. His second forced fumble of the game came on an eight-yard sack that set up the game-winning touchdown pass from Michael Hiers to J.R. Tran-Reno.
 
Jaylan Thomas was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 104 yards on five carries with trips of 28, 14 and 44 to the endzone.
 
Hiers, Smith, Richardson Top 10 Nationally
The high-flying aerial act of Michael Hiers and Chandler Smith has paid early dividends this season. Smith is tied for third in the nation with six receiving touchdowns, while Hiers ranks fourth nationally with 14 passing touchdowns and sixth with a completion percentage of 70.6%. Emmanuel Flowers checks in second nationally, thanks to his pair of fumble recoveries.
 
Dogs Perfect On Family Weekends
To go along with the 4-1 start, the Samford Bulldogs have played on three different Family Weekends with the Bulldogs going 3-0. Samford averaged 34 points per game on Family Weekends with 421.7 yards of total offense in the three wins over Tennessee Tech, Western Carolina and Furman.
 
Putting Up Points
Over the last eight seasons under head coach Chris Hatcher, the Samford offense has scored at least 30 points 45 times. The unit has put up at least 40 points 25 times, and at least 50 points a total of 11 times.
 
Quick Strikes
In eight seasons under head coach Chris Hatcher, Samford has made a habit of quick scoring drives. In Hatcher's time at Samford, Samford has had 173 scoring drives of two minutes or less and 73 that have lasted one minute or less.
 
Samford Against South Carolina Teams
Samford has an all-time record of 42-29-1 against teams from the state of South Carolina, including a mark of 14-5 against Saturday's opponent, Wofford.
 
Against SoCon Teams
Since joining the Southern Conference in 2008, Samford has posted a record of 61-50 in conference games. All time against each current member of the SoCon, Samford has a mark of 87-80-4, including an 11-13 record against Furman. Samford's all-time record against each current SoCon team is: Chattanooga (10-33-3), The Citadel (8-7), ETSU (6-3), Furman (12-13), Mercer (14-13-1), VMI (6-3), Western Carolina (17-3) and Wofford (14-5).
 
On This Date
Samford has an all-time record of 5-9 in games played on Oct 8. The last time the Bulldogs played a game on the date was in 2016, a 38-21 win over Furman. The last time Samford played at home on Oct. 8 was a 36-35 win over UCF in 1994.
