Samford Football Heads To Chattanooga For Highly Anticipated Contest

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With national and Southern Conference implications on the line, the 10th-ranked Samford football team travels to 12th-ranked Chattanooga for the final road game of the 2022 regular season. 
 
The SoCon showdown is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. CT kickoff and will be streamed on Saturday, Nov. 12th.
 
Samford shook off a sluggish start against VMI before prevailing 34-15 over the Keydets. Michael Heirs was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 322 and four touchdowns in front of the Samford Homecoming crowd. 
 
The Bulldogs and the Mocs are meeting for the 47th time in program history. Chattanooga holds a 33-10-3 lead in the all-time series and has won the last seven matchups. 
 
With a win, Samford would claim at least a share of the Southern Conference Championship.
 
Hiers Brings Home POTM & POTW Awards
After being named SoCon Offensive Player of the Month for September and October, Hiers asserted his dominance by tossing for four touchdowns against VMI along the way to being named SoCon Player of the Week for the fourth time this season.
 
Streaking Samford
Heading into the Chattanooga game, Samford is riding a seven-game win streak, which is the longest by the Bulldogs since the 1971 team had a seven-game heater to end the season.
 
Road Dogs
With the victory over The Citadel, Samford has recorded four road wins on the season which is the most in the Hatcher era.
 
Nationally Ranked Dogs
The high-flying aerial act of Michael Hiers has the junior ranked top 10 nationally in completion percentage (76.4%/1st), completions per game (27.67/3rd), passing efficiency (165.9/6th), passing touchdowns (27/4th), passing yards (2,438/10th), passing yards per game (275.9/10th), points responsible for (168/6th) and points responsible for per game (18.7/7th). Chandler Smith jumped back into the Top 10 for receiving touchdowns with 10. Smith ranks third nationally while ranking ninth with seven receptions per game. Emmanuel Flowers checks in 10th nationally thanks to his pair of fumble recoveries.

Hatcher Climbed The Winning Charts

Following the victory over VMI, head coach Chris Hatcher improved his record to 48-37 at Samford to surpass Pat Sullivan (47) for most wins by a coach in program history.
 
Putting Up Points
Over the last eight seasons under head coach Chris Hatcher, the Samford offense has scored at least 30 points 47 times. The unit has put up at least 40 points 25 times, and at least 50 points a total of 12 times.
 
Quick Strikes
In eight seasons under head coach Chris Hatcher, Samford has made a habit of quick scoring drives. In Hatcher's time at Samford, Samford has had 176 scoring drives of two minutes or less and 77 that have lasted one minute or less.
 
Samford Against Tennessee Teams
Samford has an all-time record of 87-87-9 against teams from the state of Tennessee, including a mark of 10-33-3 against Saturday's opponent, Chattanooga.
 
Against Southern Conference Teams
Since joining the Southern Conference in 2008, Samford has posted a record of 65-50 in conference games. All-time against each current members of the SoCon, Samford has a mark of 91-80-4, including a 6-3 record against VMI. Samford's all-time record against each current SoCon team is: Chattanooga (10-33-3), The Citadel (9-7), ETSU (7-3), Furman (12-13), Mercer (14-13-1), VMI (7-3), Western Carolina (17-3) and Wofford (15-5).
 
On This Date
Samford has an all-time record of 6-5 in games played on Nov. 12. The last time the Bulldogs played a game on the date was in 2016, a 24-19 win over Mercer. . The last time Samford won a road game on Nov. 12 was a 19-14 win over the Citadel in 2011.
