Bulldogs Drop UCF Thanksgiving Classic Finale To Rhode Island

ORLANDO, Fla. – To close out the UCF Thanksgiving Classic, the Samford women's basketball team stumbled 75-63 to the Rhode Island Rams on Sunday.

The Bulldogs drop to 3-5 on the season and will close out the road trip and the opening month of the season at Jacksonville State on Nov. 30. Rhode Island moves to 5-1.

A day after being ejected from the game against UCF, Andrea Cournoyer returned to action by scoring 14 points and tying her season-high with seven assists. Cournoyer also had five steals on the day.

Sanaa Redmond continued her resurgence by joining Cournoyer in double-figures with 10 points of her own.

Freshman Alyssa Tarpley hit a season-high three treys for nine points and had a team-leading four rebounds, while the duo of Sussy Ngulefac and Emily Bowman each added eight points.

Redmond led the Bulldogs to a 21-20 lead after the first quarter when the sophomore scored eight of her ten points in the opening frame. Bowman also had six points in four minutes of play.

Samford held its largest lead of the game at halftime when Rylie Stephens hit her only three of the game with seven seconds left in the first half to put the Bulldogs up 40-36 heading into the locker room.

The game shifted in the third quarter when Rhode Island came out of the break and started the second half on an 8-0 run before ultimately outscoring Samford 17-7 in the third frame.

A Cournoyer layup briefly tied the game at 55-all with 6:31 left, but the Rams proved to be too much as Rhode Island pulled away for the 75-63 victory over the final five minutes.
