Men’s Basketball Routs Anderson in Season Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Men's Basketball team opened its 2022-23 campaign with a 109-85 victory over Anderson University on Monday in front of a packed house at Pete Hanna Center.
 
Six different Bulldogs scored in double figures, led by a 19-point effort from Jermaine Marshall. Marshall also hauled in a team-high seven rebounds. Ques Glover recorded 17 points. The senior guard finished the night 7-13 from the floor while adding four assists.
 
 Bubba Parham and Jaden Campbell each scored 16, with both knocking down a trio of three-point shots. Logan Dye finished with 11 points and seven rebounds while Nathan Johnson added 10 points.
 
Jaron Rillie dished out a team-high four assists, while also scoring eight points and grabbing six boards.
 
Samford opened the night by outscoring Anderson 10-4 over the first five minutes. The Trojans fought back to trim the Bulldogs' lead to 18-13, but Samford responded with a 15-5 run to take a 33-18 lead at the 7:54 mark.
 
The Bulldogs expanded their lead to 21 after a layup by Dye put them up 51-30 with two minutes left in the half. Glover notched the half's final tally with a layup to give Samford a 56-34 lead at the break.
 
The Trojans chipped away in the second half by trimming the Bulldogs' lead to just 61-49 at the 15:54 mark. The Bulldogs promptly responded with a 13-4 run to take a 21-point lead after a monstrous dunk from Dye put them up 72-51 with 13:08 to go.
 
The Bulldogs led by 20 or more points for almost all of the time left, taking their largest lead after a Britton Johnson layup put them up 104-75 at the 2:37 mark.
 
The Bulldogs shot 48 percent (37-76) from the floor, highlighted by a clip of just under 53 percent on all field goals in the second half. Samford finished 28 percent (9-32) on threes and 76 percent (26-34) from the charity stripe.
 
The Bulldogs logged 56 points in the paint, 46 bench points, 33 fast break points, and 23 points off Trojan turnovers.
 
Samford Men's Basketball set the record for the largest attendance for a season opener with 2, 931 in attendance.
 
The Bulldogs will be back in action at home on Thursday, Nov. 10 against Spring Hill College. Tip-off from the Pete Hanna Center is slated for 6:30 p.m.
