Volleyball Completes Season Sweep of Mercer

MACON, Ga. – The Samford Volleyball team completed a season sweep over Mercer with its second 3-0 victory of the season over the Bears on Wednesday.

The win marks for the Bulldogs' third in a row and improves their record to 16-11 overall and 11-4 in Southern Conference action. Mercer falls to 9-18 overall and 5-10 in league play.
 
Kenya McQuirter led the Bulldogs with 11 kills, to go along with a .296 hitting percentage. Lauren Deaton and Gracie Lynn Butler both registered eight kills, with Deaton logging a game-high 14 digs.
 
Kate Morgan recorded nine digs while Greer Golden and Butler both totaled four blocks. Kayla Keshock added 17 assists.
 
The Bulldogs opened set one with an 8-1 run, but Mercer gradually fought back to trim their deficit to just 17-16. From there, Samford tallied eight of the next nine points to take the set 25-17.
 
In set two, the Bulldogs climbed out to a 10-4 lead and was able to keep their distance. They were able to create additional breathing room with a quick 3-0 run late to go up 20-11 and from there would finish off Mercer in the set 25-17.
 
The Bulldogs and Bears battled back and forth in set three, with the score reading 16-15 in favor of Samford after a Mercer kill. The Bulldogs took control of the match by rattling off the next five points unanswered to take a 21-15 lead. A quick 3-0 run, capped off by block assists from Kate Wonus and McQuirter, put Samford up 24-17 before eventually sealing the set and the match.
 
"The team did a good job of controlling momentum," Head Coach Keylor Chan said. "I thought our serve, defense, and our attacking were really good tonight.  We are moving in a great direction going into the conference tournament."
 
The Bulldogs will return to the court for their final regular-season contest of the season on Friday, taking on Wofford at 5:00 p.m. (CST) from Spartanburg, S.C.
