Samford Topples Northern Colorado On Christmas Sweater Night

Birmingham, Ala. – Andrea Cournoyer played hero on Wednesday afternoon as the Samford women's basketball team prevailed 69-66 over the Northern Colorado Bears on Christmas Sweater Night.

Samford moves to 5-9 on the year with the victory and Northern Colorado falls to 7-4.

Cournoyer made 11-of-18 shots from the field including a go-ahead layup with 19 seconds left in the regulation for a game-high 26 points. The senior also led the Samford with six rebounds.

To go along with Cournoyer's 26, Alyssa Tarpley added a season-best 11 points that included a trio of three-pointers. Emily Bowman collected nine points and five boards coming off the bench.

Northern Colorado led by as many as eight in the opening 10 minutes before Samford ended the first quarter on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 17.

The Samford surge continued in the second frame as the Bulldogs built a nine-point before back-to-back Tarpley threes before taking a 35-29 advantage into the locker room.

The fourth quarter dynamics were set up by a 28-point Northern Colorado third quarter that gave the Bears a 57-52 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.

With four minutes left in the game, Northern Colorado held a six-point advantage before Samford engineered a comeback to send the Christmas Sweater Night crowd home jolly.

Samford ended the game on a 10-3 run that was kicked into hyperdrive by seven points from Cournoyer.

The game was won when Tarpley came up with a steal on a Northern Colorado inbound play. Tarpley proceeded to final a streaking Cournoyer the game-winning layup with 19 seconds left in regulation.

Following the layup, Cournoyer closed out the 69-66 victory with a pair of free throws to ice the game.

Samford closes out non-conference play on Dec. 30 at home against Birmingham-Southern. The tip is slated for 6 pm.
