Softball To Host Annual Bulldog Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University softball team is set to host its annual Bulldog Classic this weekend, Feb. 26 -27, with the tournament featuring six games overall with Samford competing against Boston College and Indiana State.
 
The Bulldogs are set to play two against both Boston College and Indiana State on Saturday and Sunday at the Samford Softball Field. The action will start with a 10 a.m. first pitch on Saturday, Feb. 26 with the Bulldogs facing the Eagles of Boston College in game one. This will be followed by a matchup up between the two visiting schools before Samford returns to the diamond at 3 p.m. to compete against Indiana State. Sunday's action will follow the same schedule.
 
After nine games played, the Bulldogs are batting .298 as a team with four home runs, 44 runs scored on 78 hits and 34 RBIs. The team is slugging .393, holds a .769 on-base clip and has stolen nine bases on 11 attempts. Samford is also sitting at an overall record of 7-2 after claiming seven-straight wins to start the season.
 
All five contests will be available via livestream on ESPN+ with each stream requiring a subscription while fans can also follow along through live stats. SERIES HISTORY:
  • Samford and Boston College have competed just two times with the Eagles holding a 2-0 advantage in the series. The teams last met in March of 2018 with Samford falling to the Lions by scores of 4-0 and 9-2 at the Easton Crimson Classic.
  • The Bulldogs and Sycamores of Indiana State are knotted at 2-2 overall in their series. The two teams met last year at the Ole Miss Tournament where Samford dropped a 6-5 decision to Indiana State in extra innings prior to a 3-2 bounce back win in game two.
 
BULLDOGS TO WATCH:
  • True freshman Sarah Squillace has made an immediate offensive impact for the Bulldogs, leading the team with a .412 batting average after ringing off 14 hits in 34 at-bats to start the season. The Woodstock, Ga., native has also posted eight runs, one double, and one RBI.
  • Senior standout Timberlyn Shurbutt continues to shine at the plate, tallying four hits in seven at-bats while driving in five runs and going yard twice this past Sunday in Samford's doubleheader against Kennesaw State. She now holds a career 116 hits, 65 RBIs, and 17 home runs.
  • McKenzie Newcomb is dealing in the circle for the Bulldogs, throwing 36 innings and making five starts for an overall record of 4-1 to start the season. The right-handed pitcher has allowed just six runs in 129 at-bats while posting 41 strikeouts.
