Bulldogs Drop Game One Of DH To Memphis, Game Two Suspended In Fifth

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team dropped the first game of Friday's doubleheader with Memphis, 12-3 in 10 innings, and the second game was suspended in the fifth inning of a seven-inning contest, with the score tied at 5-5.
 
Samford falls to 7-5 with the loss, while Memphis improves to 7-4. The teams will resume the second game of the doubleheader where it was left off Sunday at 1 p.m. Following the completion of the seven-inning game, the teams will wrap up the series with a nine-inning contest. In the first game, Samford was led by Will David, Stephen Klein and Andrew Bennett with two hits each. Garrett Howe went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI for Samford. Brayden Broome also drove in a run, going 1-for-1 at the plate.
 
Alex Goff (1-1) took the loss on the mound for Samford, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up six runs, five earned, on three hits. Jacob Cravey started the game on the mound for the Bulldogs, and Dominick Ganley, Mason McCormack, Timmy Watkins, Logan Jones and Jacob Newman also saw time on the mound for Samford.
 
Taylor Howell led Memphis, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Chase Kessinger (1-0) earned the win for the Tigers, tossing 1.0 inning, giving up no runs on two hits.
 
Memphis plated a run in the second inning and another in the seventh to take a 2-0 lead. Samford came back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to knot the score at 2-2. Howe doubled to right field to drive in Bennett and Garrett Staton, bringing the teams even at 2-2.
 
The teams went into extra innings, still knotted at 2-2. In the top of the 10th inning, Memphis took control of the game with 10 runs on five hits and two Samford errors to take a 12-2 lead. Samford plated one final run in the bottom of the 10th to make the final score 12-3.
