BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team completed the series sweep of Colgate University with an 8-0 run-rule victory on Saturday afternoon at the Samford Softball Stadium.

BOX SCORE: (PDF)

After a leadoff single and perfectly placed SAC bunt, the Bulldogs struck first with freshman Sarah Squillace making it back home off a Colgate throwing error in the bottom of the first. Samford's lead extended by two runs over the next three plays after senior Timberlyn Shurbutt sent on up the middle to plate Tedder prior to senior Kolby Holcombe recording an RBI single for the early 3-0 advantage.

It would quickly become a 5-0 game in the bottom of the third with the Bulldogs earning two runs on two hits. With runners on second and third, freshman Grier Bruce fired a grounder through the left side to score pinch runner Lindsey Nelson while fellow courtesy runner, Ally Bigham, advanced to third. This would be followed by a fielding error from Colgate's pitcher Kaitlyn Borruso, allowing for Bigham to cross home plate for Samford.

Three more runs would be added to the board for the Bulldogs in the next frame, starting with Grier Bruce drawing a walk with bases loaded to score freshman Gwynnie Hornibrook. This would be followed by a shot to left field from sophomore pinch hitter Ansley Yantis to bring home McKayla Cothran and Logan Champion for a two RBI single.

The run-rule would take effect in the top of the fifth after right-handed pitcher McKenzie Newcomb shutdown Colgate at the plate with two ground outs and a strikeout. Newcomb earned her 10th win on the season for an overall record of 10-6 in the circle. The Meridianville, Ala., native retired five Raiders after 17 batters faced while giving up just two hits in her 5.0 innings of work.
