Final: Jacksonville State 2 | Samford 4
It would be a pitcher dual for the first the two innings with Samford's
McKenzie Newcomb and JSU's Kat Carter giving up no hits while Newcomb retired four at the plate. The first run of the day would go to the Bulldogs in the bottom of the third after designated hitter
Gwynnie Hornibrook lined one out to right field on a 1-0 count to plate
Mary Katherine Tedder for the early advantage.
Samford increased its lead by three runs in the bottom of the next frame with freshman
Sarah Squillace sending one out to left field, advancing to second while fellow freshman
Kedzie Howe made it home off a Jacksonville State fielding error. One play later,
Mary Katherine Tedder stepped up to the plate and smacked her 11th double on the season down the left field line, plating
Amanda Briskin and
Sarah Squillace.
The Gamecocks eventually made their way on the board in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from Hannah Buffington after she fired one out to right field. Jacksonville State didn't stop there, cutting into Samford's lead once again in the top of the seventh with a leadoff double followed by an RBI single from Lindsey Richardson to put the game at 4-2. However, the late Gamecock rally would be shutdown with two fly outs and a ground out for a Bulldog victory at the Samford Softball Stadium.
