OXFORD, Miss. – The Samford softball team was edged out 2-0 by the Rebels to close out the Ole Miss Classic Sunday afternoon in Oxford.
BOX SCORE: (PDF)
It would be a defensive battle between both teams through the first four innings with starting pitcher
McKenzie Newcomb giving up no hits and retiring two Rebels at the plate. However, Ole Miss found its way onto the board in the bottom of the fifth after shutting down the Bulldogs with a double play and ground out to third in the top half of th inning.
After back-to-back hits and a sacrifice bunt, Rebel Nyomi Jones recorded an RBI single and Ole Miss's third hit on the day to advance Angelina DeLeon to third and plate Brooke Barnard. The Rebels then locked in their 2-0 victory over Samford in the next play, capitalizing off a wild pitch to allow for DeLeon to make it back home.
The Bulldogs and Rebels both traded three hits with Samford's
Amanda Briskin (1-3),
Timberlyn Shurbutt (1-3), and Kolby Holcome (1-3) each picking up one throughout the game. Freshman
McKenzie Newcomb threw a complete game for the Bulldogs, receiving her fifth loss (6-5) after giving up two runs and one walk after 21 batters faced.
