SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford's
Mary Katherine Tedder and
McKenzie Newcomb were both honored by the Southern Conference when the league released its weekly softball awards Monday afternoon.
Tedder was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week, while Newcomb earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors. The Bulldogs swept a three-game series from Western Carolina over the weekend to move to 6-0 in the SoCon, tying for the best start to league play since joining the league for the 2009 season.
Tedder hit .555 (5-for-9) with four doubles and six RBI in the weekend series. Her best game came in game two of Saturday's doubleheader when she went 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. She also drove in two runs in Saturday's first game.
Newcomb earned a pair of wins in the Western Carolina series. She pitched the complete 7.0 innings, allowing no runs on just one hit and striking out five batters to earn the win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader sweep. In Sunday's contest, she tossed 4.0 innings, allowing just one run on four hits in earning a second victory.
Samford will play a three-game Southern Conference series at Furman this weekend. The teams are set to play a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. (CT) and a single game Saturday, also at 1 p.m. (CT).
