GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford baseball team dropped an 11-1 decision in seven innings in the final game of a three-game series at UNC Greensboro Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
With the loss, Samford falls to 18-19 overall and 5-4 in Southern Conference play. UNCG improves to 17-23 overall and 2-7 in league games.
For Samford at the plate,
Blake Bortak went 2-for-3.
Will David drove in a run in a 1-for-3 performance.
Jalon Long (2-4) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up six runs, four earned, on two hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
UNCG was led by Mitchell Smith, going 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI. Dallas Callahan went 2-for-3 for the Spartans. Alex Hoppe (5-2) pitched 3.2 innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits to earn the win for UNCG.
UNCG plated a run in the first inning and three more in the third to take a 4-0 lead. The Spartans broke the game open with two runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth to make the score 10-0. In the top of the sixth inning, Samford plated a run, but UNCG added one final run in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 11-1.
Samford will host Alabama on Tuesday, April 26. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
