BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team dropped a 16-6 decision in eight innings to 22
nd-ranked Wofford in the final game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Samford earned wins over the Terriers both Friday and Saturday to take the series, two games to one. Samford falls to 20-21 overall and 7-5 in Southern Conference play. Wofford improves to 31-13 overall and 9-3 in league action.
"Overall, it was just an incredible weekend for our guys, winning the series and completely outplaying them," Samford head coach
Tony David said. "It was a tough last couple of innings today in what was a really good game up to that point."
Will David went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
Towns King drove in three runs with a home run in a 1-for-4 performance.
Colton Ledbetter and
Kaden Dreier had two hits each for the Bulldogs.
Brody Westbrooks (3-3) pitched two thirds of an inning, giving up three runs on four hits to take the loss for Samford.
"Towns was great all weekend, playing through an injry," David said. "He gave us another big hit today. Our pitchers dominated their run game most of the weekend and was a big reason why we took the series. Other than championships, there is nothing I've enjoyed more than taking this series from them. They will remember it and we will remember how this one finished today."
Wofford was led by Brennen Dorighi, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI. Brice Martinez also homered for the Terriers, going 2-for-4 with four RBI. Holden Wilder (6-0) tossed two thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on one hit to earn the win for Wofford.
Wofford scored three runs in the first inning and another run in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. Samford came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. The Terriers, however, answered with three runs in the sixth inning, four runs in the seventh inning and five runs in the eighth inning to make the final score 16-6.
Samford will play host to in-state rival Troy on Tuesday, May 3. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field and admission is free.
