GREENVILLE, S.C. – The third-seeded Samford baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision to top-seeded Wofford in a winner's bracket game in the Southern Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon at Fluor Field.
Samford falls to 28-28 with the loss. The Bulldogs will play again Saturday evening at 6 p.m. (CT) against the winner of the day's second game between UNCG and Mercer. Wofford improves to 42-14-1 and advances to Sunday's championship round.
Samford was led at the plate by
Will David going 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
Towns King also drove in a run for Samford.
Cole Fryman (0-2) took the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs, surrendering three runs on two hits.
For Wofford, Zeb Roos went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI. Holden Wilder (8-0) tossed 1.2 innings, allowing no runs on one hit to earn the win for the Terriers. Luke Stephens pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit to pick up his first save of the season.
Wofford took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Brennen Dorighi singled up the middle to drive in John Dempsey for a 1-0 Terrier lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, Samford took the lead, plating two runs. With one out in the inning, David hit a two-run home run to left-center field to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
Wofford tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jack Renwick scored from third base on a ground out by Brice Martinez to knot the score at 2-2.
The Bulldogs took the lead again with a run in the top of the fifth inning.
Garrett Staton came home from third on a ground out by
Towns King for a 3-2 Samford advantage.
Wofford came back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead. Trey Yunger singled to right field to drive in Dempsey for the first run of the inning. Roos then singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Renwick and Dorighi for a two-run Wofford lead. Nolen Hester later singled to left field to bring home Roos for a three-run Terrier advantage.
The Terriers added four runs to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Renwick singled to left field to drive in Ryan Gelanie for the inning's first run. Roos then doubled down the left-field line to drive in Renwick and Dorighi. The final run of the game scored when Yunger came home on a sacrifice fly by Martinez for a 10-3 Wofford lead.
