Bulldogs Drop Heartbreaker In Series Finale Against UNCG

BIRMINGHAN, Ala. – In battle for the regular-season crown, the Samford softball team fought valiantly but ultimately fell to the Spartans of UNC Greensboro, 4-2, after eight-innings on Sunday afternoon at the Samford Softball Stadium.

Freshman pitcher Jordyn Partain put in 7.2 innings of work for the Bulldogs, allowing two earned runs on four hits in her 20th start on the season. Fellow freshman McKenzie Newcomb entered the circle in the top of the eighth where she forced a ground out to close the frame in relief. Â

The Spartans captured an early 2-0 advantage after capitalizing off a Samford fielding error in the top of the first, while the Bulldogs were held scoreless until the bottom half of the fourth. Designated hitter Gwynnie Hornibrook locked a leadoff single before pinch runner Lindsey Nelson entered and advanced to second off a UNCG wild pitch. Sophomore Ansley Yantis followed suit with a two-bag, no out hit, putting Nelson in scoring position. One play later, freshman Grier Bruce drove Nelson home with her fourth RBI on the season to cut into the Spartan lead.

The game would quickly be knotted at two with Samford plating a run in the bottom of the sixth after junior Merritt Cahoon laced a ball out to center field to score Tedder on third. It remained a tied game through the next two frames, forcing extra-innings at the Samford Softball Stadium.

In the top of the eighth, the Spartans began with a leadoff double from Jessie Shipley prior to a sacrifice bunt executed by Makenna Matthijs to advance Shipley to third. UNCG's Delaney Cumbie then stepped to the plate and registered an RBI single with a shot out to left field to put the Spartans on in front once again. This was followed by an insurance run two plays later with Samantha Lagrama sending one up the middle for Tori Dalehite to make it home to double the lead. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs were unable to respond in the bottom half of the inning after being retired in order by the Spartan defense.

The Samford softball team will head to Greensboro, North Carolina for the Southern Conference Championship Tournament. All the action will start on Wednesday, May 11 at 11:30 a.m. (central time) with the Bulldogs facing No. 7 ETSU seed, at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
