HOUSTON, Texas – A late goal by
Layton Glisson lifted the Samford soccer team to a 1-0 win at Rice on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Samford improves to 2-0 on the young season. Rice falls to 0-2 with the loss.
"It was a really hard game because it was super hot and you had two teams that really wanted to win and gave a great effort," Samford head coach
Todd Yelton said. "It felt like a game that would either end scoreless, or end 1-0. It was going to take a goal like that to get a win on a day like today. In the first half, we didn't get in the box enough. In the second half, we were way better in transition and we were able to put a little more pressure on them. That's a really good Rice team. I think Brian (Lee) is one of the best coaches in the country. It was just a really hard fought game. It's a nice feeling, and it makes the plane ride home a lot better, I can tell you that."
The teams battled for most of the game in a scoreless tie. Glisson scored off an assist from
Taylor Yount in the 87
th minute for the game's lone goal, giving the Bulldogs the 1-0 win.
Glisson shared the team lead in shots at three with
Mary Raymond and
Alyssa Conarton. Glisson and Conarton had two shots on goal apiece.
Ella Simpson and Yount had two shots each for the Bulldogs. Samford goalkeeper
Morgan McAslan saved four shots in posting her second shutout of the season.
Bella Killgore led Rice with two shots, both on goal.
As a team, Samford tallied 13 shots, to eight for Rice. Each team finished the game with six corner kicks.
Samford will host Murray State for the Bulldogs' home opener on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field. Admission to the game is free.
