BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team remained unbeaten with a 4-1 win over the Murray State Racers Thursday evening at Shauna Yelton Field.
"Overall, it was a really good effort," Samford head coach
Todd Yelton said. "The kids played great. I think that (Murray State) is a good team."
With the win, Samford improves to 3-0 on the young season. Murray State falls to 0-3 with the loss.
Sophomore
Whitaker Buchanan netted two goals for the Bulldogs. Senior
Kylie Gazza and sophomore
Maison Wells had one goal each for Samford.
Nikki Bario dished out two assists for Samford. Morgan Bodker had Murray State's lone goal.
The game was scoreless until late in the first half when Buchanan scored a goal in the 34
th minute off an assist from Bario. Buchanan then scored again off a corner kick from Bario in the 43
rd minute for a 2-0 Samford lead.
In the second half, Gazza scored in the 79
th minute for a 3-0 Bulldog lead. Samford made the score 4-0 when Wells scored in the 86
th minute. MSU's Bodker scored off an assist from Hailey Cole in the 90
th minute to make the final score 4-1.
As a team, Samford outshot Murray State, 18-11. The Bulldogs had 15 corner kicks to just three for the Racers.
The Bulldogs will host the 12
th-ranked Ole Miss Rebels on Sunday, Aug. 28. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start from Shauna Yelton Field and admission is free.
